To get very fine geometrically accurate flat surfaces, hand scraping is used. Hand scraping is an art that can be done only by very skilled and highly experienced workmen. Scraping involves using a flat scraper, which is a hand tool with a flat edge, to remove very small amounts of metal from a surface. The Roughness Average Ra achieved during hand scraping is in microns. Machine beds are often hand scraped to achieve the desired flatness.
